NEW DELHI: Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge and Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday addressed a joint press conference and expressed confidence in the opposition INDIA bloc’s victory in the Lok Sabha elections.
Kharge also promised to provide 10 kg of free ration per month to the poor if the alliance comes to power.
“In four phases of elections that have been completed, INDIA bloc is in a strong position and people have decided to let go PM Modi.On June 4, the INDIA alliance will form the government. This election is an important one to save the democracy and the constitution,” Kharge said.
Kharge emphasized the importance of the elections in safeguarding democracy and the constitution, and warned against the alleged rise of autocracy and dictatorship, which could hinder the election of candidates with different ideologies.
Kharge also raised concerns about the fairness of the elections, citing instances where opposition party leaders were prevented from filing nominations in constituencies where prominent BJP leaders were contesting.
“How will you elect someone with your ideology? Wherever any big leader of the BJP is contesting, opposition party leaders are being stopped from filing nominations. I have seen in Hyderabad that one woman candidate of BJP was checking women’s identities by removing the burqa. Is this how free and fair elections are conducted…?” he said.
Meanwhile, Akhilesh Yadav claimed that the INDIA bloc would secure 79 seats in Uttar Pradesh.
“I want to congratulate people from the press for the golden period beginning on June 4, that will be a day of ‘freedom of press’. BJP is tangled in its own negative narrative… INDIA bloc will win 79 seats in Uttar Pradesh, there is the fight in just one seat that is in ‘Quito’,” he said.
