NEW DELHI: Noting increased instances of fraudsters making international spoofed calls displaying Indian mobile numbers to Indian citizens and committing cyber-crime and financial frauds, the Centre on Sunday said it has devised a system to identify and block such calls.
“These calls appear to be originating within India but are being made by the cybercriminals from abroad by manipulating the calling line identity (CLI).Such international spoofed calls have been misused in recent cases of fake digital arrests, FedEx scams, drugs/narcotics in courier, impersonation as Govt and police officials, disconnections of mobile numbers by DoT/TRAI officials, etc,” the ministry of communications said in a statement.
It added that the government has taken several steps to ensure that incoming international spoofed calls are blocked by Telecom Service Providers (TSPs).
Key directions by the Centre:

  • Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) have devised a system to identify and block international spoofed calls
  • Directions have been issued to Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) for blocking incoming international spoofed calls
  • DoT has taken initiatives to protect telecom users through the Sanchar Saathi portal
  • TSPs are already blocking incoming international spoofed calls with Indian landline numbers
  • Report suspected fraud communications at Chakshu facility on Sanchar Saathi to help combat fraudsters

The ministry said that the spoofed numbers are already being blocked by the TSPs as per the directions issued by the DoT.
“Despite best efforts, there may still be some fraudsters who succeed through other means. For such calls, you can help everybody by reporting such suspected fraud communications at Chakshu facility on Sanchar Saathi,” the ministry added.
