NEW DELHI: Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat on Sunday morning. This visit marked the beginning of the day on which Modi is scheduled to be sworn in as the Prime Minister for his third consecutive term.
Modi also paid tribute to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee as he reached Delhi’s Sadaiv Atal ahead of his oath-taking ceremony as PM.
Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the founding member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), served as the first prime minister from the party. Together with Lal Krishna Advani, Vajpayee played a pivotal role in establishing the BJP as a significant force in Indian politics.
Supporters were present in sizeable numbers as the prime minister-designate visited these monuments. Modi also offered his respects at the National War Memorial, a monument to soldiers who have made the supreme sacrifice for the country.
The swearing-in ceremony will take place at Rashtrapati Bhawan in the evening, where President Droupadi Murmu will administer the oath of office to Modi and his council of ministers.
It is expected that several allies, including the TDP, JD(U), and Shiv Sena, will be represented in the coalition government.
