LUCKNOW: Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday chose to remain silent on party’s Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal assault case and passed on the mic to senior party colleague and UP incharge Sanjay Singh to answer media queries on the issue. The two were present at Samajwadi Party headquarters with Akhilesh Yadav to address a joint press conference.
In his response AAP MP Sanjay Singh questioned Prime Minister Modi and BJP’s silence on Manipur violence, Prajwal Revanna, protest by women wrestlers in Delhi against sexual harassment and Delhi Police assaulting Swati Maliwal herself when she went to meet them.He said AAP was a family and there was no need to politicize the issue.
“The entire country was, and still is till this date, in pain over how a Kargil warrior’s wife was stripped off her clothes and paraded naked in Manipur, hundreds of women were subjected to assault, Prime Minister of India remained silent on the issue. Prajwal Revanna raped thousands of women including some of mother’s age but PM Modi went out asking for votes for him and described him as the future of India who will strengthen the country. BJP helped him escape,” Sanjay said.
“When our wrestlers were protesting at Jantar Mantar to demand justice, this same Swati Maliwal, who was then the chairperson of (Delhi) Women’s Commission, was dragged and beaten up by Delhi Police when she went there at night to meet the protesting wrestlers. In Uttar Pradesh itself we have seen what had in Kuldeep Singh Sengar case and the Hathras incident. Country’s prime minister had chosen to remain silent on the issue and had not spoken a word,” Sanjay said.
He said AAP was like their family and the party has already cleared its stance on the issue. “ … BJP and PM Modi should answer all these issues that I mentioned … Politics should not be done on Swati Maliwal’s issue,” he said.
On Monday Swati Maliwal was allegedly assaulted by Arvind Kejriwal’s assistant Vibhav Kumar at CM’s residence in New Delhi. Swati Maliwal has not issued any statement on the incident yet. The BJP staged a protest raising the safety issue of Maliwal and said the Rajya Sabha MP had gone incommunicado after the incident. As a first reaction from the Party Sanjay Singh had on Tuesday said the party would take appropriate action. Swati served as the chief of the women’s body before becoming a Rajya Sabha MP.
