NEW DELHI: A day after Sonia Gandhi made an emotional pitch in Raebareli for Rahul Gandhi saying “handing over my son to you, he won’t disappoint you”, BJP leader and Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took a dig at Congress leaders saying “but who will take your son?”
“He has been re-launched 150-200 times. But who will take your son? Whoever will take your son into their home will be ruined,” quipped Sarma.
On Friday, Sonia Gandhi while addressing a joint rally with Rahul and Priyanka in Raebareli, said, “All my life, my hands have remained full with your love and blessings…Whatever I have in life, I owe it to you. I am now handing over my son Rahul to you…The way you accepted me like one of your own, keep Rahul with you in the same manner.”
Sonia was first elected to Parliament from Rae Bareli in 2004, marking the start of an innings that lasted until earlier this year when she vacated the seat to become a Rajya Sabha member.
Former Rae Bareli MP Sonia Gandhi passed the constituency to son Rahul after 20 years. Along with Kerala’s Wayand, Rahul is contesting this Lok Sabha elections from Raebareli.
Polling in Raebareli and nearby Amethi will be held in the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections on May 20.
In Amethi, Union Minister Smriti Irani is pitted against Congress candidate Kishori Lal Sharma, a longtime loyalist of the Gandhi family.
