NEW DELHI: During a campaign rally in Rae Bareli, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday humorously remarked, “ab jaldi karni padegi” (now, I will have to get married soon) when asked about his marriage plans triggering an enthusiastic reaction from the crowd.
Rahul Gandhi, who is running for the Lok Sabha from Rae Bareli in the 2024 elections, was accompanied by his sister and fellow Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra at the rally. The Congress party recently announced Rahul as their candidate for Rae Bareli, while KL Sharma, a loyal party member, will contest from Amethi against Union Minister Smriti Irani, who defeated Rahul in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
Amethi has been a stronghold for the Gandhi family, with Rahul representing the constituency from 2004 to 2019, following in the footsteps of his father, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, who held the seat from 1981 until his death in 1991.
Sonia Gandhi also represented Amethi in 1999 before passing the baton to Rahul in 2004. Similarly, Raebareli has been a bastion for the family, with former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi winning the seat three times and her husband, Congress leader Feroze Gandhi, being elected twice in 1952 and 1957.
In addition to seeking re-election in Rae Bareli, Rahul Gandhi is also a sitting MP in Kerala’s Wayanad. In Rae Bareli, he will face Congress defector and three-time MLC Dinesh Pratap Singh of the BJP. The constituency is set to vote on May 20 in the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections. In the 2019 elections, Sonia Gandhi emerged victorious in Rae Bareli, securing 5,34,918 votes, while Dinesh Pratap Singh posed a significant challenge, garnering 3,67,740 votes.
This rally marked Rahul Gandhi’s first major campaign event in Rae Bareli since filing his nomination. Priyanka Gandhi has been actively campaigning in both Rae Bareli and Amethi, demonstrating the Congress party’s commitment to retaining these key constituencies.
