BJP’s Kaiserganj candidate Karan Bhushan Singh on Thursday said the accident involving his convoy, that killed two young men riding a motorcycle, was “painful”. Karan Bhushan Singh, the son of former Wrestling Federation of India chief and incumbent MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, added that the accident was a “coincidence”, saying the young men got run over by a car in the convoy after they collided with a woman and fell into the vehicle’s path.

Police reports from Wednesday indicated that the driver of the SUV lost control and hit the victims, identified as cousins Rehan Khan and Shehzad Khan, aged 17 and 20, respectively. A 60-year-old woman named Sita Devi was also reported to have sustained injuries in the accident. She was reportedly walking by the road when the SUV struck her. She has since been discharged from the district hospital after receiving treatment.

Karan Bhushan Singh told PTI that he learned about the accident upon arriving in Bahraich for a programme. The leader said that he immediately directed a contact in Kaiserganj to assist at the scene, and ensured that the injured were taken to hospital.

The BJP leader denied any involvement in the accident and criticised some media reports alleging the same as “false and fabricated”. He added that such media reports misrepresented the incident. “A different type of image is being created in a section of the media about the accident which is false and fabricated,” he added.

The SUV driver has been taken into custody by the police. According to Singh, the victims were supporters of his father, Brij Bhushan. He added that some party volunteers were with the victims’ families and attended the funeral.

Kaiserganj MP Kaiserganj Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh also commented on the accident. He said the accident was sad, but denied his son’s involvement, saying his car was three kilometres away from the site at the time.
