NEW DELHI: Four police officers from Kupwara district in Jammu and Kashmir were hospitalised on Tuesday night after allegedly being assaulted by army personnel, according to officials. The injured officers, identified as Special Police Officers Rayees Khan and Imtiyaz Malik, and Constables Saleem Mushtaq and Zahoor Ahmad, are currently receiving treatment at SKIMS Hospital in Soura.Hospital officials have reported that their condition is stable.
The incident occurred when an army team, led by an officer, allegedly entered the Kupwara police station and physically assaulted the police officers. The exact reason for the altercation has not been revealed by either the police or the army.
The confrontation may have been triggered by a police raid on the residence of a local territorial army man in Batpora, Kupwara, as part of an ongoing investigation, PTI reported quoting sources. The raid allegedly angered the local army unit, prompting them to confront the police at the station.
A defense spokesman based in Srinagar stated that he is currently unaware of the incident and will provide a comment only after obtaining more information.
